Over the past half-century, the corporate culture has drawn families from their hometowns and neighborhoods into a global marketplace. This has caused opportunities and hardships. The world is smaller and more isolating all at the same time.
But a global marketplace has also made traditional employee benefits difficult or impossible to continue. If traditional pensions and unaffordable health benefits no longer can be used to retain employees, what can?
Many two-parent families choose to save on child-care costs by working different shifts so the children are always in the care of a parent. But if a parent's shift falls at the same time as the child's Little League playoff, or his first school program, finding a way to cover the parent's workload so she can take time to attend can really increase morale and retain employees.
If you use this incentive, make sure it is clearly communicated to employees. Having clear, simple policies also is essential--such as stating this is an alternative way to use vacation time; or each employee can use 16 hours per year on family events.
Make a Difference
Your employees, as most people, like to feel they are contributing to a better society. Some employers have allowed workers two or three hours a week to tutor at local schools, or deliver hot meals to housebound seniors. Other employers let their employees choose a joint, company-wide task--gathering jackets and mittens for foster children; building or upgrading a playground or basketball court in a poor neighborhood; renovating an apartment in a halfway house for battered women and children, or building a house with Habitat for Humanity. Some employers have sponsored an entire grade at a school that has at-risk kids and followed those kids from fifth grade through high school graduation and have guaranteed that any child who completed high school would get a free ride to college. Short term or long term, the sense that being a part of your work group means giving back to the community makes a difference.
